Andrea and David have been fostering for almost 17 years and have cared for over 40 children

We became foster carers because I had relocated from Cardiff to Sunderland and I was used to having a big family around me.

In total, we have been fostering for almost 17 years. During this time, we have cared for over 40 children of different ages and from different backgrounds. The children’s ages have ranged from 14 months up to 16 years old and all the placements have been different such as permanent, temporary, respite and emergency.

My partner, David and I are both 58 years old with children of our own. David’s son lives in the North East whilst my daughter lives in Cardiff with her children.

We initially enquired about fostering as our friend, who was a Deputy Headteacher, had two children at her home one day, she explained that the local authority was looking for a place for the children to stay. We then enquired into becoming foster carers and haven’t looked back since.

Being a foster carer brings fantastic rewards. Knowing that you are able to make a difference in a child’s life, either short or long term, is amazing. It’s also great to see positive changes in the family unit and sometimes seeing a child return home.

Training from Together for Children is provided either in a classroom environment, by e-learning or distance learning which is great as it offers flexibility that suits your needs.

My advice to those who are looking to be a foster carer is to do your research. There are so many things to look into and consider. Discuss the decision with your family as they will become part of your support network.
