Valley Road Academy in Hendon is celebrating after being ranked as the best performing primary school in Sunderland by the Real Schools Guide.
The guide, published in January, ranks schools based on 45 different measures, including SATs scores, Ofsted reports, teacher numbers, pupil progress and attendance.
Valley Road Academy also ranks as the seventh best primary within the North East for the 18/19 academic year.
In recognition of being within the top 3% of schools in England, the school, which is part of the IRIS Learning Trust also received a letter from The Minister of State for School Standards congratulating them on very high levels of progress.
Gill Jack, Head of School, said: “This recognition is a huge pat on the back for all of our staff, who work tirelessly to create a challenging and innovative learning environment.
Debra de Muschamp, Executive Head of the Iris Trust, said: "We have a diverse school community and our school motto 'Success for all' reflects the strong and unique identity we have. It is wonderful to be recognised for our efforts and it demonstrates that this is a place where every single person can realise their potential. We are grateful for the support from our community and families and it is fantastic to have the school and the local area represented in such a positive way.”
Councillor Michael Mordey, Hendon ward councillor, and Deputy Leader of Sunderland City Council, was a student at Valley Road Academy and was among the first to congratulate the school on the recognition.
He said: “Young people in this city, and in my ward of Hendon, deserve the highest standard of education and that is absolutely what they get at Valley Road.”
