Mileage Allowance

School Transport Mileage Rate (STMR) is a payment of 45p a mile made to parent/carers of young people with Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND) who are eligible for travel assistance.

Benefits

  • You can choose the most appropriate travel arrangements for your child that best fit with your personal circumstances
  • You control how funding is used to get your child to and from school/college on time in a way that suits you and your child
  • You can look at opportunities to share with other parents and potentially increase your buying power
  • Reduces the requirement on the Together for Children to procure external providers

This has allowed for good lines of communication between home and school, even throughout secondary school, and has been invaluable when dealing with day-to-day needs and issues. Being able to speak to school staff to deal with things at an early stage means that (my child) has definitely had better attendance and felt more secure going to school.

How?

The amount you receive will be calculated using the distance your child travels from home to school/college, for each day they attend.  You will then receive monthly payments direct into your bank account.

To access the scheme please contact the SEND Transport Team on (0191) 561 2284.

FAQs

Q. What can I spend the STMR on?

A. You can spend the STMR how you like on travel arrangements, as long as your child gets to and from school/college on time and in a way that ensures their safety, encourages their attendance and does not negatively affect their ability to learn once they are at school/college

Q. Does it impact my other benefits?

A. No. STMRs have no impact on any other benefits you might receive.

Q. How long can I claim STMR?

A. As your child grows older, it's likely they will wish to become an independent traveller. You can start supporting or training your child to travel independently, or you can talk to your school/college or the Transport team about Independent Travel Training.
