English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The English as an Additional Language (EAL) team at Together for Children provides a range of support to schools across Sunderland to ensure EAL children can fulfil the potential they have as learners. The focus of the service is to empower both class teachers and individual settings to be able to support the needs of EAL learners effectively so that children may obtain a greater standard of language proficiency.

Using our expertise, we can offer a range of approaches to help individual children to make progress towards the curriculum and the proficiency in English gradings in the four key areas: Speaking, Reading, Writing and Listening.  These approaches include - working alongside a setting or class teacher to develop the strategies and resources that are used within the classroom, providing early language lessons as required and the delivery of CPD to both a whole setting and individual key phases.

When the child first arrives in the setting, the school will be asked to complete an initial referral form. After this has been received by the team, the setting will be supported to carry out an assessment of the child. Further discussion will then determine the best route forward which may take the form of the EAL advisory teacher working alongside members of staff to co-plan and co-deliver a session within the classroom or professional discussions around how the setting can support the child going forward.

For any new EAL referrals, please use the form below.
