Reading tips for the Hungry Caterpillar

Reading tips
Try asking a few simple questions as you go along to spark curiosity, build language skills and make the story come alive
Ask things like:

  • Can you find the cheese in the book?
  • Can you count how many fruits the caterpillar eats?
  • Can you fly like a butterfly?
  • Can you point to the caterpillar on each page?
  • Can you name the colours you can see?
  • Can you make the sound of the caterpillar munching?

Small moments like these help support learning through play — and they're a great way to enjoy a story together.

Here's how to make your own:

1️⃣ Draw your caterpillar outline on a sheet of paper.
2️⃣ Cut an apple into thirds, dip one flat side into red paint, and stamp the caterpillar's face.
3️⃣ Paint a foot with green paint (a paintbrush works best - and old clothes are a must!) and use the footprint to create the caterpillar's body.
4️⃣ Add eyes with a paintbrush or pen to bring your hungry little friend to life.

Top tip: Try using chopped carrots, broccoli, or potatoes in different sizes to print extra body segments if feet are too ticklish!

And don't forget to pop something on the floor if you're doing painted feet - things can get squishy!
