TfC's SEND Minibus Scheme
Together for Children is delivering an innovative minibus scheme in partnership with local schools and organisations to deliver statutory Home to School transport in a more flexible and sustainable way.
Accessible and standard minibuses are currently placed with partner organisations across Sunderland. As well as delivering a transport route for children and young people with SEND, these vehicles are used by partners to support the delivery of their own programmes and activities, increasing opportunities and access across the community.
We've had very good feedback about the bus and the service we provide. It's helping Keep Active to provide transport to and from our activities during the holidays and after school, which has been great in increasing access for young people who may have previously struggled to attend our sessions. A sustainable approach
By placing vehicles directly with schools and organisations, TfC has created a more efficient and locally responsive model. The scheme:
- Maximises use of existing community resources
- Promotes shared journeys, promoting inclusion and reducing environmental impact
- Provides a cost-effective alternative to traditional transport models
- Improve access to education and activities
Designed with young people in mind
- The scheme reflects TfC's commitment to co-production, with elements such as vehicle design and branding shaped by young people, ensuring the service reflects their voices and experiences.
Looking Ahead
