Sunderland students receive their GCSE results

August 2021

School pupils across Sunderland received their GCSE results today (Thursday 12 August 2021).

For some students, today marks the end of their time in education. Whilst some will continue into education to complete their A-Levels or high qualifications, others will begin training schemes such as apprenticeships or will make their way into the world of work for the first time.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, students have faced disruptions to their education throughout the academic year. Despite the setbacks faced, students in Sunderland have achieved fantastic grades.

This year, students were assessed on what they have been taught, not what they might have missed, with teacher-assessed grading determining their final grades using a range of evidence.

Simon Marshall, Director of Education Services, said: "I'd like to congratulate all of the pupils in Sunderland who received their GCSE results today and wish them all the very best for their future. GCSE results day is a very exciting time in a young person's life and no doubt, many young people will be considering what their next steps will be as they think about their future."

Councillor Louise Farthing, Portfolio Holder for Children's Services at Sunderland City Council, said: "Well done to all pupils receiving their GCSE results today. You have all faced enormous pressures throughout the academic year, but I am very proud of your continuous dedication and hard work, and I'm positive you will all receive the grades that you deserve."

Simon adds: "Together for Children offers a Careers and NEET Service for all young people in Sunderland. If you've received your GCSE results today and aren't sure what you'd like to do next, please do get in touch with our team who can provide advice and guidance about further education, training and employment. Our team can help you explore your options and can support you to choose the path that's right for you."

Any young person aged 13 to 18 can access our Careers and NEET Service, as well as young people up to the age of 25 who have a special educational need or disability and an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
