Sunderland Music Hub launches new Youth Choir launches in the city

November 2021

The city will be singing its way into the New Year with the launch of a new Sunderland Youth Choir.

Sunderland Youth Choir, organised and funded by Sunderland Music Hub, launches on Monday 6 December and will meet weekly on Monday evenings during term time from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. The choir, which will be a Climate Friendly Choir in line with the City Council's mission to become a carbon neutral city, will meet at the new City Hall building to rehearse and prepare for performances at city wide events throughout the year.

Sunderland Music Hub have been training a team of Young Vocal Leaders who will work with the Musical Director to train the choir. The choir will be open to all students across Sunderland aged between 7 and 16 years old and will be free to attend thanks to funding from the Department for Education (DfE) through Arts Council England. There will not be an audition process, all you need is a desire to sing and a love of music!

Vocal Leader, Laura Taylor, said:

"We are looking forward to building on the brilliant singing that takes place in our schools. This is an amazing opportunity for the young singers we have in Sunderland to continue to develop their musical interests and to create friendships with young people from different areas of Sunderland. It is proven that singing is a brilliant tool for developing confidence and improving well being."

Lizzie Nixon, Music Hub Manager, said:

"It's been such a long time since Sunderland had a city youth choir - almost twenty years - and it's important to us to make sure that young people in the city who are talented and interested in singing have a space to come together to do so. We want to unlock the talent of young musicians in the city by providing spaces where they can progress. The Youth Choir will be a welcoming, inclusive space for any young person aged 7 to 16 who would like to develop their singing to come and do that without facing the financial barriers that can sometimes stand in the way of our young people fulfilling their musical potential. We are also very excited about becoming a Climate Friendly Choir. The climate emergency is important to all of the young people we speak to and it's the responsibility of all of us working across the city to make sure that our activity does not negatively impact on the climate crisis."
